EDITORIAL

In the last quarter of 2024, COP Climate, COP Biodiversity and COP Desertification are taking place one after the other from mid-October to mid-December. These events could encourage a diplomatic dynamic to better coordinate responses to ecological challenges. However, they are being held in an uncertain and tense geopolitical context, marked by the Kazan summit, which is part of the multilateral fragmentation of the world, the extremely uncertain US presidential election, and by the locations chosen for two COPs: Baku, in Azerbaijan, despite the conflict with Armenia, and Riyadh, at the heart of tensions in the Middle East.

Companies and investors find themselves on their own in the face of these uncertainties. In terms of biodiversity, for example, the results of the TNFD pilots are very disappointing. On the climate front, this year's NY Climate Week showed many alarming limitations.

In response, Ksapa's programs are all the more relevant.

Ksapa is again invited to contribute to the COP dynamic this year. Ksapa is appreciated for its ability to design and deploy consulting activities and programs that link biodiversity, climate and social issues. This “just” transition approach needs to be replicated and deployed before COP 30 on Climate Change in Brazil in 2025, which will mark the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. This COP will be decisive for stepping up climate action, with more ambitious national commitments and long-term strategies.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration, innovation and collective impact alongside you.

What to Learn From SBTN Initial Target Validation Pilot?
In our blog this month :  In the COP 16 Biodiversity context, the Science Based Targets Network’s (SBTN) Initial Target Validation Pilot Summary Report (2024) provides key insights into the pilot phase of validating corporate science-based targets (SBTs) for nature, focusing on land and freshwater. The pilot, which ran from May 2023 to June 2024, aimed to guide companies in setting scientifically robust, measurable targets that align with environmental thresholds and support biodiversity. All in all, the pilot shows ultimately that too many efforts are invested in top-down approaches whereas what’s on the ground is already quite clear. Corporations are hiding behind insufficient traceability and data collection issues to forget focusing efforts on the most important: Their impacts on the ground. Continue reading here

What’s up on Governance with CSRD?
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a major piece of EU legislation that requires companies to report on a broad range of sustainability-related issues, including corporate governance. Under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), governance-related disclosures are covered under ESRS G1-G4, which outline specific expectations for corporate governance reporting. Boards have a role to play in CSRD, making the regulation and its enforcement a compulsory exercise where top management has “skin in the game”. More in this article
